This idea comes up a lot on social media and on pregnancy forums. But is sperm quality as important to pregnancy symptoms as people claim? Nothing in the father’s sperm sample would make her feel pregnant. Pregnancy symptoms are caused by hormones produced by the mother’s body and the developing placenta.

New research also highlights a protein called GDF15 (growth differentiation factor 15) as a major cause of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy. The placenta makes a lot of GDF15, and women who had lower levels of GDF15 before they got pregnant tend to feel worse when the levels shoot up after conception. And that’s a maternal pattern, driven by the mother’s baseline hormone levels, not the quality of the father’s sperm.


Where the Sperm Quality Myth Comes From

The myth does not come out of thin air. It rests on a real, interesting fact that is overstretched.

The placenta consists of a mixture of maternal and foetal genes. In some of these genes, the father's copy has a stronger influence on placental growth than the mother's copy. This is a real subject in developmental biology, called genomic imprinting.

The trouble begins when people move from “the father’s genes affect the placenta” to “the father’s sperm quality explains how sick the mother gets.” Dr Tim Moss, Health Content Manager at Healthy Male, an Australian men’s health organisation, took this challenge head-on. He added that semen does contain GDF15, secreted by the prostate, but this version is involved in regulating the immune system during conception. It has nothing to do with sperm function or the nausea a pregnant woman may experience later on.


Sperm Quality Affects Pregnancy Symptoms: What the Science Actually Confirms

So if sperm quality doesn’t directly affect pregnancy symptoms, does it make a difference for pregnancy at all? Yes, just not the way the myth says. That’s where sperm health really starts to translate into measurable pregnancy outcomes.


Sperm DNA fragmentation and pregnancy loss

Sperm provide half the genetic material for an embryo. If the DNA of sperm is damaged, called DNA fragmentation, it can lead to a higher risk of failed implantation or miscarriage. Again, this is a story about immune tolerance and timing, not symptoms like nausea or fatigue.

  3. Keep active and maintain a healthy weight. Paternal obesity has been associated with poor sperm quality and a higher rate of pregnancy complications.

  4. Avoid heat exposure to the testes. Hot tubs, saunas, and wearing tight clothes for long periods of time can reduce sperm production.

  5. Get tested for infections. Untreated infections in the genital tract can reduce sperm quality and, in some instances, impact fertility.

  6. Let your body rest. Sperm takes about three months to mature, so the lifestyle changes you make today will impact your sperm quality in a few months.
